Flat Ribbon Cables

Features and Benefits

Manufacturers are looking for ribbon cable that withstands exposure to chemicals, high temperatures, abrasion and flexure while maximizing production efficiencies. Temp-Flex High-Performance Flat Ribbon Cable was designed specifically for the harsh environments in which PVC and TPE cables often fail. At the same time, this ribbonnized cable enables IDT/IDC press-fit terminations, enabling faster production times.

An application often requires power, data and coaxial cables but is constrained by space and environmental limitations. Temp-Flex Hybrid Ribbon Cables combine wires of various sizes and types, such as coaxial and shielded parallel pairs, in one compact construction. This can include multiple micro cable types to facilitate termination.

Designers need reversed connector pinout for board-to-board mating, which isn’t available with most ribbon cables. Temp-Flex Intermittent-Bonding Ribbon Cable provides the flexibility for reversed connector pinout for board-to-board connectivity while maintaining the ability for mass termination.

Custom Ribbon Cable

Customized solutions are available based on application requirements such as current, voltage, tensile strength, space constraints, flexibility and flex life. Molex offers a variety of design options including, but not limited to, conductor sizes (32 to 16 AWG); materials (bare Copper, Silver-plated Copper and high-strength alloys); and various pitch alternatives.

  • Extruded cables provide high flex life and avoid delamination.
  • FEP fluoropolymer material is non-outgassing, helping provide safe use in vacuum environments.
  • High operating temperature with fluoropolymer extrusion withstands soldering terminations as well as sub-arctic environments.

Hybrid Ribbon Cable

In a range of industries, such as commercial aviation, industrial automation and medical, a single application often requires power, data and coaxial cables but is constrained by space and environmental limitations. Temp-Flex Hybrid Ribbon Cables combine wires of various sizes and types, including coaxial and shielded parallel pairs, in one compact construction.

  • Rugged design withstands harsh environments while providing high performance.
  • Compactness combines wires of various sizes and types, including coaxial and shielded parallel pairs, in one efficient construction.
  • Makes termination easier, offering multiple micro cable types in one construction.

Intermittent-Bonding Ribbon Cable

Flat, intermittently bonded cables allow for increased flexibility, ease of termination, 180-degree cable rotation at discrete sections and organized wire placement. They also permit automated or semi-automated termination, saving significant time during mass production termination, reducing termination errors and improving termination efficiency.

  • Reverse connector pinout board-to-board affords the flexibility to reverse connector pinouts while maintaining mass termination
  • Mass/discrete termination enables mass termination on one end and discrete termination to individual probes on the other
  • Thermal management using mass termination with discrete wires supports airflow, decreases heat and avoids potential damage
