Innovating to Help Millions Maintain Eyesight

The journey for innovative medical technologies is filled with potentially intractable challenges that could derail a project, cost time and resources and, most importantly, leave otherwise life-changing ideas with no path forward. Phillips-Medisize, a Molex company, used its unique collaborative design approach to help a global leader in ocular treatments design, develop and manufacture a better solution for treating wet age-related macular degeneration.

Why it matters: Nearly 20 million people worldwide suffer from wet age-related macular degeneration. It’s the leading cause of blindness among people 60 or older.

How it worked: Phillips-Medisize gathered a broad team of experts in manufacturing, design, human factors, as well as the customer’s pharmaceutical and clinical experts, to work through a problem statement: How does Phillips-Medisize manufacture a novel new solution?

  • Manufacturing advanced medical devices pushing the boundaries of innovation requires specialized capabilities. In this case, being able to dispense adhesive in a band no bigger than a few hundred microns. That’s only slightly larger than a human hair.

Go deeper: Read more about how Phillips-Medisize’s collaborative culture and systemic approach to ideation, discovery and execution allow teams to work through the complicated development process of cutting-edge medical products in this ONdrugDelivery article.
